Well put--that seems to be the purpose here--nice friendly chat about nothing in particular. What is the best "Jack Straw"?

how is talking about individual songs or interesting sugues "nice friendly chat about nothing in particular"? (not trying to be a jerk) - also, i agree with rob to a certain extent - friendly banter is fun and breaks up a day.

i also don't often stream full shows - i am so backed up with all the great shows people have mailed me, it would be rude of me to stream here while putting their hard work on the backburner and ignoring what they gave/traded me.

What's wrong with nice friendly chat about nothing in particular - alongside the odd well-aimed rabble-rousing barb? :-)

The 'best' Jack Straw is the one that rocks you today - even though it might leave you unmoved tomorrow...

"The 'best' Jack Straw is the one that rocks you today - even though it might leave you unmoved tomorrow..."

I must say, that was put beautifully! :)

So, 'much talk about nothing' might be somewhat my fault, as I have come on here and asked everything under the planet of you guys... age, occupation, family history, etc. and have gotten some of you to lighten up and therefore fall a little off the grateful dead track. Somebody once said that a forum was like the parking lot before the show.... did you talk about nothing but the dead there? I think not. you probably bullshitted about everything, around the grateful dead and why you were there. Hope the fact that we steer off course a lot is okay. It can be fun to get into back and forth chatter about nonsense.

On the other hand, in case I haven't memtioned, what I do when there's a thread like the Jack Straw example... I copy & paste, and then print notes, and if I haven't heard that version I will sometimes seek it out. And if I don't have that show, it goes on my list to look for with a little note next to it why and what to listen for. You should see the pages of notes I have. So keep talking. About everything. :)

Thank you, Dancinbears. I think this may be our first direct contact, so hello to you! I agree that getting to know a little about the person behind the viewpoint can be illuminating. I think we're all dyed in the wool bullshitters to a certain extent - but hey, that's human nature. I'm always happy to go off course - sometimes you end up in more interesting place.

Don't know about this copying and pasting notes idea though. Hell, I don't even take a shopping list to the supermarket. Must be why I forget the milk so often...

well hello robthewordsmith... we get our chance to talk. :)

I come on this forum and 'bullshit' probably more than anybody, but I honestly read almost all the threads. I cannot begin to tell you how much I've learned too! I know the 'lists' thing might sound like work to you, but trading (and sharing) is my hobby and it equals fun and enjoyment for me. Just had to have a way to remember things... and scribbling on paper just wasn't doing it anymore!

But the bullshitting and making friends part... that makes me get off the computer with a smile on my face! :)

Dancinbears - I'm just a disorganised guy I guess. Last I heard they couldn't shoot your for it! I know what you mean about a smile on your face - the number of times I've left this forum with laughter bubbling inside... There are good times to be had here. Glad to share them with you.

Just to respond and hopefully end this thread: I don't have a problem with anything. Once in a while you can get shown the light and all that. The board should be for fun and fun can lead to knowledge.

I think the idea of simply sharing something that just blew you away is better than presenting shows in some sort of pedantic manner. It seems to turn people off. I think some of the silliest posts get the best responses.

And, yes, Dancinbears, the best Jack Straw is the one you are listening to. Everything else is completely subjective anyway. I love the early stuff, others the later stuff. It's all good. And if it didn't change over the years, it would have been a long, dull trip.

Hey Dancin and Robthe; two people I do respect...but you would not really be unmoved the next day (what is good has to stand the test of time; it is not entirely subjective or we wouldn't have so many people agreeing...people that do matter)...what matters matters, and you should consider that, and then reconsider the doc's plight...

No big deal--you two aren't the problem; you two are part of the solution, but it just isn't gonna work today.

And I don't think the doc would have a problem with anything either of you every posted...all he needed was a response, out of simple politeness. His detailed comments warranted that...

William - I repect you deeply, my friend, but yes I do think it is largely (though not entirely) subjective. So much depends on your mood when you're listening. What matters matters today - but might not so much tomorrow. Maybe more so for me than for you. I should stop talking nonsense and go to bed I guess - gone midnight here now.

oh - thought there were some negative vibes from you toward me in the past???? i'm almost sure of it (not vitriolic by any means) - maybe i am mistaken??? i was kinda being a brat in this instance by saying you left me out. was only playin' - enjoy readin your posts though my friend.

but i truly had the feeling you have thought i have been nothing but a jerk (which if fine - to each his own) - much like orthodoc does

(and ducats, which is fine because i think he is too).

Hey Dire, maybe the same way some people think you are a jerk (and they're wrong because I know you aren't), you might be wrong about them too.

It's hard to judge people only by what you read, because it all comes down to HOW you read it.

Very well said, DB...I have so often re-read my own posts to see how it could have been interpreted and been shocked that I could have been sooo stupid to write it so...

You are a kind soul that I hope continues to play an important role here.

Dire--again, my friend (if I may), not my intention. You have made clear your penchant for a humorist post now and again, and a quick temper when wronged, but I have not had such feelings for you, and am sorry if it came across as such.

No, I think of you as the first person, along with Ian, to offer me music with no expectation of return...That counts for something.

cool WT - i may have misinterpreted a couple of posts here and there (easy to do with the written work within the confines of a forum). I have always hoped to consider you a forum friend too, even when we disagree regarding certain issues (hope i have never been rude toward you - don't think i have). You are a GREAT contributor here and I hope if I give a playful jab here and there you know I respect you for what you bring here.

Peace my friend
